Nurses call on Pacific Cigar Company to change name and nursing uniforms worn by staff at "The Nurse", an upscale cigar shop in Bangkok, Thailand
July 23, 2003 -- The Nurses' Association of Thailand is asking for your help in a campaign to persuade Pacific Cigar to stop using "nurses" to sell their cigars and wine. Pacific Cigar (Thailand) is a subsidiary of Pacific Cigar Co., which reportedly controls 75 per cent of the Cuban cigar market in the Asia Pacific region. In December 2002, Pacific Cigar relocated one of their cigar and wine stores from Hong Kong to Thailand. This store was and is called “The Nurse,” and its sales staff apparently dress in nursing uniforms. It is not clear to the Center why the shop has this nursing theme.
In mid-July 2003, the President of the Nurses' Association of Thailand, Jintana Yunibhand, RN, Ph.D., released an open letter to Pacific Cigar objecting to the damage to the image of the nursing profession being caused by "The Nurse." The Nurses' Association of Thailand also pointed to the negative public health implications of having “nurses” promoting health-harming substances.
This story was covered by Agence France-Presse, as well as The Nation, one of Bangkok's English language newspapers, and The Star from Thailand's southern neighbor, Malaysia. The Bangkok Post, another major English language newspaper, recently ran a flattering profile of Pacific Cigar (Thailand) general manager Joe Thawilvejjakul. This profile featured a plug for "The Nurse," but failed to address the effects of its marketing strategy on the image of nurses or public health.

Our letter-writing campaign has ended to Hong Kong parent company Chief Executive Officer Mr. Dag Holmboe and Pacific Cigar (Thailand) general manager Joe Thawilvejjakul.
We asked the cigar executives to change their Bangkok store's name from "The Nurse" (or anything implying that their goods promote health), and to stop dressing their sales staff in nursing uniforms or any other health care worker attire.
